This 3,500 Ton capacity Allsteel head forming press is capable of forming tank heads up to 12’ ( approx 3,600 mm ) diameter, in 3/16” ( approx 4 mm ) thick stainless steel, with a dish depth of 24” ( approx 600 mm ).

The press uses servo hydraulics with double ended cylinders to form the knuckle radius and to clamp the part while high pressure air forms the dish. Rapid approach and return speeds are utilized to minimize the total forming time required.

Standard CNC control system allows easy operator interface; simply enter the part number of the dish to be formed, and all parameters are activated automatically. Thus, forming tonnage, knuckle depth, air pressure and flow, and press open height are part of the program data. No data entry is needed once a part is defined.

The CNC supports manual and automatic operation, self-test and data logging as well as remote diagnostics, for maintenance purposes. Safety features include over pressure protection, over dish protection, provision for light curtain safety barriers, and fail safe decompression in case of electrical power failure during a dishing operation.

Dish Press

Typical tank head as formed on the Allsteel dish press. This part is 12’ 0” (3,600 mm) diameter, 24” (600 mm) dish depth, with a 4” (150 mm) knuckle radius, and is formed from 3/16” (4 mm) stainless steel.

The estimated forming time for this part is 6 minutes. If material handling time is included, production capability is six to eight parts per hour. Forming this part on a bumping type multi hit press or a large spinning lathe would take days, not hours, certainly not minutes. Allsteel productivity is amazingly far ahead of old technologies!
